Tomorrow is my birthday and it sure is a different world from last year. In addition to losing my Dad nine months ago, being isolated, away from family, Coronavirus and the uncertainty of it all is unsettling. For me and my family, we are mostly all good. Our life is pretty swell…
However, I’ve been the only one working in the office this week, while most are working remotely from home. The struggles are real and the high amount of phone calls in the office can be overwhelming. The sheer number of people that have been laid off or not working is heartbreaking. Don’t get me wrong; it’s an honor to take the calls and listen to their stories.... These are residents that were working, but COVID-19 has totally disrupted their lives.... I’ve spoken with grandmothers that have reminded me repeatedly that they have never needed help before but now they are desperate and don’t want to lose their homes. There have been moms that don’t know how they can pay their bills or keep the electricity on for their children. Even a single dad. This father is worried to pieces about his son having to sleep in the car at night, and what’s worse is what his little boy will go through with his friends from school if they get evicted from their home....
These are things no one should have to worry about. There are so many stories and so many people… At the end of the day, what do we do? What should you do? If you could just hear the pain in their crackling voices and the tears…
My birthday wish is this. If you can help, maybe just the price of a coffee or pizza? Whatever you can do knowing that you are secure in your own bed at night or that your utility bills are paid again for another month. Every bit helps our neighbors... In times like this, philanthropy can shine. Thank you....
