Be a Reading Mentor

Did you know that only 69% of students in Charlotte County were reading on grade-level when leaving third grade as of the most recent FSA results? While we have made improvements over the years, there are still many students in our community who are struggling to learn to read. Once they get past third grade, however, it is imperative that they are able to read to learn!

When you give just a few hours each month to a Charlotte County student, you will see his reading skill and his self-esteem SOAR! That's the impact your time can have in the life of a child.

Charlotte County Reads is a United Way of Charlotte County funded collaborative program that combines the resources and expertise of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast, Boys & Girls Clubs of Charlotte County, SKY Family YMCA, and Charlotte County Public Schools. Students who could benefit from additional reading support are matched with a mentor through Big Brothers Big Sisters and enrolled in a quality afterschool program at either the Boys & Girls Club or the YMCA. Charlotte County Public Schools provides data support, monitoring students’ progress in the program over time.
