Who Are the People Behind VITA?
By Angie Matthiessen, Executive Director
January is the time of year when many begin thinking about taxes. It’s unfortunate that tax season follows such festive holiday celebrations. However, our wonderful volunteers are already hard at work preparing for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA). I’ve shared before how exceptional this program is, and the difference it makes in the financial stability of those we serve is truly remarkable.
Our volunteers are the real heroes here, handling everything from scheduling appointments, to greeting clients, preparing taxes and ensuring quality control. By the way, this program is totally free to our clients.
But who are the people behind VITA? Many are dedicated volunteers who return year after year to support the program. Let me introduce you to Karen Moerlein, VITA Site Coordinator, who is starting her seventh year with VITA. She says, “I was retired and bored. This is the only job I would not give up simply because of the appreciation people have for what we do. I love VITA – it only takes one client to see the expression on their face and know they are getting money back.”
Ethel Miller, a snowbird from Michigan, has been volunteering with VITA for 8 years as a scheduler, greeter and preparer. Ethel states, “This is a great opportunity to keep yourself active, meet some wonderful friends along the way and serve others while ‘Powered by Grace.’” A theme that was phrased a few years ago because the volunteers truly are compassionate and full of grace as they serve the residents of Charlotte County.
Another Site Coordinator, Jim Gaffney, has been volunteering now for 8 years with VITA. Jim shares, “This is a very rewarding experience for me to help folks here in Charlotte County. It is a cost-saving program for so many people. There is a lady who calls every year to ask me to do her taxes and it’s great to see the same clients return year after year.”
There are so many VITA volunteers I would love to recognize. Their dedication and enthusiasm truly make a difference and leave a lasting impression on our VITA clients. Volunteering is a rewarding experience, both for those who give their time and for the communities they help.
The VITA program offers free tax preparation and e-filing services to individuals and families with an annual household income at or below $66,000. Our friendly volunteers are scheduling appointments now. Please call 941-421-7100 for information.
Although many of our volunteers have been preparing for months, there is still time to join us and we welcome you! You do not need to be a numbers person or even prepare the taxes. There are plenty of roles for everyone. If you are interested in volunteering or scheduling a tax appointment, please visit: unitedwayccfl.org/2024TaxSeason
