One Wreath at a Time
By Angie Matthiessen, Chief Executive Officer
During my years working at a children's hospital, I saw how much the little things could mean to families going through difficult times. A moment of joy, a reason to smile, or simply knowing someone cared could make a difference. I've carried that perspective with me throughout my career, and it's one reason I appreciate opportunities to bring a little joy into the lives of others.
Last year's Festival of Wreaths was filled with that kind of joy. The creativity of the wreaths, the festive atmosphere, and the excitement of everyone enjoying the evening made it such a special event. I loved seeing people come together, share in the fun, and embrace the spirit of the season. There was even some very spirited competition.
And knowing that this joyful evening also supports the work of United Way Charlotte County made it is all the more meaningful. As we prepare for our fifth annual event, I can't wait to see what this year's Festival of Wreaths will bring on Wednesday, December 9!
Imagine wreaths of every size, color and style filling a beautifully decorated venue with holiday charm. Guests can browse the displays, purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win their favorite wreath, bid in the silent auction and enjoy delicious food catered by Carmelo's, along with wine and holiday punch. It's an evening to slow down, soak up the season and enjoy being together.
The fun continues this year with our Festival of Wreaths Business Challenge! Charlotte County businesses are invited to put their creativity on display, compete for bragging rights, and support United Way Charlotte County (UWCC) in the process. From traditional holiday elegance to whimsical designs and unexpected colors, each wreath brings its own personality to the competition. And once again, our community gets to help choose the winner!
Here's where you come in! Beginning November 23, you can visit participating businesses, admire their competition wreaths and vote online for your favorite. Each vote costs just $1, and you can vote as often as you'd like. Voting runs through December 6, giving businesses a little friendly competition—and our community a chance to help choose the winner. The winning business will be announced at the Festival of Wreaths on December 9. Businesses interested in participating must register by November 20.
Of course, the beauty of this event goes beyond the wreaths themselves. Every dollar raised helps us mobilize the power of our community so all can thrive. Through our programs and partnerships, we work to strengthen families, support individuals facing financial challenges and create opportunities for people of all ages to build brighter futures.
That's what makes community events like this so special. They give us a reason to gather, share a little holiday joy and make a difference together. Whether you're a business ready to show off your creative side, someone who loves a little friendly competition or simply looking for a fun way to celebrate the season, there's a place for you.
So, visit participating businesses, cast your votes and then join us on Wednesday, December 9, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at A Vermont Touch Florist & Events in Punta Gorda for our Festival of Wreaths.

I hope you'll join us. Who knows? Maybe today's wreaths really are the beginning of tomorrow's forest of trees!
