Lunch Focuses on Hearts for Families

By Angie Matthiessen, Executive Director

Soon after I began my time with United Way Charlotte County (UWCC), a chance meeting at a United Way meeting led to dreams of creating a Women United Affinity Group.  Why? Because I wanted UWCC to connect and empower women in Charlotte County and through conversations with other women leaders, Women United began.

It is hard to believe the ninth annual lunch is upon us. A favorite event by many, it’s not just about the event itself, it’s about the connections and moments within that space that truly inspire us.

The venue for Women United Luncheons is far more than just a gathering place—each has become a haven where women come together to honor, support, and uplift one another. Friendships blossom, tears flow, and we grieve for those who have faced difficult challenges. A place of joy, we celebrate victories, share laughter and find strength from the stories of the Woman of Distinction and Woman of Courage who inspire us all.

The first few luncheons were held Under the Oaks in a friend’s backyard. We gathered in a beautiful, serene setting to share stories, learn from one another, and enjoy the beauty of nature around us.

Later, we moved to the elegant and classy courtyard at Carmelo’s, a setting that perfectly complemented the spirit of our gatherings. Women hugged, smiled, and listened to heartfelt stories of recovery and happiness whilst enjoying delicious Italian cuisine.

Worden Farm provided a stunning backdrop one year, with its fresh air and endless sunflowers. The rustic charm created the perfect atmosphere as our hearts were touched by listening to not only the challenges of others but also their triumphs.

Last year, we were set to gather at Laishley Park, however the rain forced us to quickly relocate to New Life Church, where we found warmth and shelter from the elements. In spite of it all, emotions ran deep. There was vulnerability and strength, reminding us of the resilience and power within our community.

What does our journey look like this year? Our Keynote Speaker will be part of this year’s journey as her passion for honoring and supporting families across generations is unmatched.  Our Keynote Speaker for the 9th Annual Women United Lunch is Kirsten Russell, Vice President, Community Impact – Community Foundation of Sarasota County.  Professionally, I have looked to Kirsten for inspiration for years. To be honest, I could listen to her for hours on end. Her understanding of how to serve the whole family is made clear as she speaks. You will not want to miss this.

This year, we’re excited to invite you to join us at TT’s Tiki at Four Points by Sheraton Punta Gorda Harborside on Thursday, February 13, 2025. Overlooking the stunning Peace River, this event promises to be an unforgettable experience with moments that, like the river before us, will flow smoothly and meaningfully. Together, we share a commitment to uplift hearts for families in our community.

Join us (bring your girlfriend too) for this vibrant celebration honoring the incredible contributions of local women who inspire and empower us all. We’ll be gathered in the large tiki, complete with heaters, sheltered from the weather, as it may still be cool. For more information, please visit: unitedwayccfl.org/PeaceRiver.
