How Community Members Help Shape Local Impact
By Angie Matthiessen, Chief Executive Officer – United Way Charlotte County
One of the things I value most about United Way’s work is that it is truly community-driven. The decisions we make are not made in isolation, they are shaped by the voices, perspectives, and experiences of people who live and work right here in our community.
That is exactly what our Community Impact Panels are all about.
As we prepare for our upcoming 2026–2028 grant cycle, we are once again inviting community members to be part of this important process. Panel volunteers help review funding applications from local nonprofit agencies, taking a thoughtful look at programs, outcomes, and budgets to help guide how resources are invested across our community.
What makes this process so meaningful is the diversity of perspectives at the table. Each year, we bring together individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, business leaders, educators, retirees, and community members who simply want to give back. That variety leads to stronger conversations, more thoughtful decisions, and ultimately, greater impact.
We are also fortunate to have many panelists return year after year. Once people experience the process, they often want to stay involved. They see firsthand the incredible work being done by our local agencies and the difference these programs make in people’s lives.
For many, this is also an opportunity to learn.
As our Community Impact Program Manager, Jen Martin, often shares:
“Serving on a panel is actually how I first became involved with United Way. I came in wanting to learn more about what was happening in our community—and here I am, 10 years later, still part of this work. It gives you such a deeper understanding of the needs around you and the impact these programs have.”
That is something we hear often. Panel members walk away not only knowing more about the nonprofit landscape, but also feeling more connected to the community as a whole.
This is more than a volunteer opportunity—it is a chance to be part of meaningful decision-making. Panelists help ensure that funding is directed to programs that are effective, impactful, and aligned with the needs of individuals and families in our area, especially those who are working hard but still struggling to make ends meet.
No prior experience is required to participate. What matters most is a willingness to engage, ask questions, and be part of a thoughtful, respectful discussion process.
If you have ever wanted to better understand the needs in our community, connect with local organizations, or play a role in shaping real change, I encourage you to consider joining a Community Impact Panel.
Because when a community comes together to make informed decisions, the impact is lasting—and it reaches far beyond the table.
If you’re interested in being part of a Community Impact Panel, the training is set for April 14, and we need you to sign up now. To register and save your seat, please visit www.unitedwayccfl.org/ImpactPanel.
